Birgit teaches yoga in the direct lineage of her mentor Benjamin A.Thomas, the Iyengar yoga style. Under her mentor's guidance she studied for 10 years and has completed more than 2000 hours of training. Every other year Birgit travels to Pune, India, to study with the Iyengar family at the Ramamani Yoga Institute.
Since 2004, Birgit teaches many public classes, including pranayama, a therapeutic class at the AARS (Asian American Recovery Service) for former drug addicts, and a class at the VA in Menlo Park. In addition to classes, she had held local and national workshops, and offers private yoga sessions. Her background includes deep roots in Shotokan Karate, Zen meditation for more than 30 years, and Qi Gong. She has studied these disciplines with Sensei Haramoto, Zen monk Hannya Koun and professor A.Tayam. Her classes are a well-balanced composition of yogasana, pranayama, chanting, meditation and the integration of the yoga sutras by Sri Patanjali. She encourages the students to practice with an open and humble mind and heart; and to maintain a state of equanimity on and off the mat.
